Description
The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum will host the 9th Annual Archaeology
Day on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 10 AM to 2 PM. Archaeologists and educators will fill the museum
and grounds with demonstrations and activities for the whole family to participate and enjoy. There will be
over 40 professionals demonstrating various Native American skills like pottery making, flintknapping, basket
weaving as well as artifact identification by archaeologists. This event is free and open to the public.
Del Glasner with ArkLaTex Gem & Mineral Society will have a Louisiana mineral display, and the
Chippolattas will demonstrate making stone tools by flint knapping.
You can learn how to throw an atlatl used by Native Americans before the bow and arrow with Mark
Brink, Park Manager of Poverty Point.
Marty Young from Pioneer Heritage Center will show his blacksmithing skills, and Archaeologists Tad
Britt and Jeff Girard will identify artifacts brought in by the public.
The historians from the Bossier History Center will have their Caddo hands-on tools on display and
explain their use.
Curtis Bias Caddo Magnet ceramicist will help you make a Caddo styled pot.
There will be naturalists with Walter B. Jacobs Park to lead you on a mock dig and record the objects
discovered.
More demonstrations include Artists Geraldine Zelinsky on basketry.
For those interested in learning more, the Louisiana Archaeology Society (LAS) will have
representatives to discuss joining the NWLA Society chapter.
