“If you have a library and a garden, you have everything.” At least according to Cicero you do, and I can’t say I disagree (even if my opinion is slightly biased). If you agree with me, however, then I have an event for you: BLOOM! Festival at R.W. Norton Art Gallery on Saturday, March 24th.
This will be their third Festival, and Bossier Parish Libraries is excited to be participating for the second time. Norton has a multitude of activities planned for the day, and not just fun for the kids but a bit of something for the whole family. For example, you can learn about bees and taste local honey with Randy Faire, or go on a quest for knowledge with the NWLA Master Gardeners.
Are you perhaps curious about bugs? The Boy Scouts of Troop #64 will teach you about tasty bugs (yep, I really do mean bugs you can eat). Or if that’s a bit too up-close and personal for you, LSUS Professor Dr. Beverly Burden will be on hand to teach you some little-known facts about bugs. And there will be several food trucks on site to provide more traditional fare for lunch.
If the creepy-crawlies don’t peak your curiosity there’s bird watching and nature talks, such as the “Tree Factory” talk with Project Learning Tree and “Seasonal Science” with Starbase. These groups, and others I will run out of room to mention, are incredible and their staff members have an incredible breadth of knowledge.
But, if listening to talks isn’t really your area of interest, Norton also has a number of groups (including us!) who are offering craft time! You can paint a rock for your garden, or wherever you want to keep it really, with Feist-Weiller Cancer Center or paint on canvas with the Bossier and Caddo Talented Arts Program. There will even be cookie decorating in this area with the Girl Scouts, Troop #1099.
And don’t forget to make your way inside the museum for their special exhibition, many pieces are provided by local artists. There are also tours you can take throughout the day. This is genuinely one of our favorite events of the year because it offers education and entertainment in a variety of ways for all ages. It’s a rare treat and one that shouldn’t be missed.
