Day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Pamela Kennedy January 12, 2018

Day of Service. That is what Dr. King would have wanted to see on this day to honor him. Instead of sharing stories about his life and legacy I wanted to share a way for you to follow his dream and give to others who have nothing to give back to you. To share love and kindness for we don't know what anyone else is going through.

*The official Day of Service is January 20 but I encourage you to involve the kids on their day off from school*

Here are a couple of ways to help this weekend but I ask that you remember and always give to others and remember our blessings.

Feed the Homeless Shreveport

Each Saturday a group of people gather and take food and donations downtown to hand out to those less fortunate. It only cost a little time and money if you can give but makes a world of difference. This week they are short some items and with the cold spell coming back could use some more warm clothing, etc. See their Facebook group for more information or call Candy at 746-0666.

Volunteer to clean up after shelter animals:

Is it hard work? Yes. Is it a little gross? Mostly. Do you leave feeling fulfilled? ABSOLUTELY!

Those kittens and puppies are cute but it takes a lot of work to get everyone ready for adoption day and there are never enough hands. Contact your favorite shelter to find out how to help, I know they'll have something for you. Here are my favorites: Humane Society of NWLA, Port City Cat Rescue, Rockers Rescue and Shreveport Bossier Animal Rescue. Even the city shelters can use some help. Love on animals, get a little dirty and make someone/somethings day.

Clean up at the park or other community area:

It drives me crazy to see trash all over the ground. Even my 9 year old knows better, but some don't so we have to make up for their messiness. Grab the family and head to the local park and pick up trash. Pack rubber gloves because some of that is just gross. Afterwards let the kids play and have a picnic, it's a win-win for everyone.

Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army Shreveport-Bossier is in need of at least 10 volunteers to help tidy up their thrift store following the holidays. Sorting clothes and staging the store for upcoming sales are some of the projects the non-profit needs assistance with. Anyone interested in volunteering on Saturday, January 20th from 9am-Noon may contact Jennifer Stephens at (318) 424-3200 ext. 23 no later than Wednesday, January 17th. The service project will only be scheduled on the 20th if there are at least 10 volunteers. There will continue to be a need for volunteers in the thrift store and at the food pantry throughout the year. You may also contact Jennifer Stephens regarding any availability you may have to volunteer outside of the National Day of Service.

Port City Cat Rescue:

I'm highlighting them because I personally do this and LOVE it! Clean up the cat cages at Petsmart twice a week. It takes maybe half an hour each day and helps tremendously! Visit their Facebook page for more information.

There are always ways to help, all you have to do is look around.
