United Way Day of Caring is coming up on Friday, May 12. BPL will join other organizations and businesses for this day of work to help other nonprofits. It might seem a bit unusual for a library to participate in a day of work, but libraries are becoming more progressive in their approach to supporting the areas they serve.
Community Engagement Librarian Mandi Johnson describes the occasion this way: “It is a community-wide volunteer event hosted by United Way of Northwest Louisiana where a team of 13 from BPL will partner with non-profits in the community that have a need.”
Approximately “500 volunteers from local businesses and other organizations will work together on projects that include painting, landscaping, clerical work, sorting food and clothing and cleaning.” http://unitedwaynwla.org. Johnson says it is a “boots on the ground” type of Building a Better Bossier.
The American Library Association states, “America’s libraries continue to transform themselves, keeping pace with the changing economic, social, and technological aspects of American society. Libraries’ deepening engagement with their communities takes many forms, from technology to education to social services, and serves many segments of the population.” http://www.ala.org/news/state-americas-libraries-report-2014/community-engagement
