Do they really hear us?

By Pamela Kennedy February 11, 2016
I grew up in a home where my parents served others, I saw it daily and knew all of the sacrifices that they made for others. Many times when I was young I didn't understand it but as I've grown older I found myself doing the same thing. I love helping others, that is a big reason why I love my businesses Macaroni Kid Shreveport-Bossier and Mom on the Go. They give me an opportunity to help others and be there for my family.

I'm trying to teach Amelia the importance of helping others as well, that we need to be caring and empathetic even if we may not always understand from their point of view. There are days that I wonder if she even hears me. You know those days right?  The "I NEED ANOTHER TOY" and "IT'S NOT FAIR, I NEVER WIN!". That just a couple of those meltdowns that I'll share with you. It can be exhausting and I worry that maybe I am spoiling her too much.

But then this happens...

Amelia is currently doing the St. Jude Math-a-thon with her school and I thought that since we live on the parade route why not do a little bake sale with a portion of the proceeds going to this great cause. I made a sign for the bake sale and Amelia wanted to make her own so I left her with markers and poster board and went to the kitchen to bake. When I came back I found this:

It says: "Please buy are cupcakes, cocoa, and coffe. We need money to help St. Jude, we want to help thosands of kids. thank you for helping st. Jude.  We care about everyone."

To say I am a proud Mom is putting it mildly. I was in tears reading what she wrote and at that moment I knew that I was getting through. Of course, at the bake sale she almost made me crazy with the whining about having to stay out there but I just kept looking at this poster and knew I had made progress.

So don't worry, if we show our children how to be caring they are watching and learning and one day they'll surprise us with their BIG HEARTS.

If you want to donate to Amelia's cause you can make an online donation or mail a check to Amelia Kennedy, PO Box 44251, Shreveport, La 71134. All donations due by February 21st and watch my Mom on the Go page to find out how you can donate by hiring me to help with some errands.
